Specimen notes
Public Note:
20th Fungal Foray of New Zealand; redet based on ITS sequence comparison (3 bp different to NZ collection cited as D. gunnii in Genbank (AF325653), plus spores about 11-15 x 6.5-7.5 µm, typical in shape, but a little larger than cited by Horak (1971).
Public Note:
The collection was poorly gathered and without stem bases on 2 of the 3 fruitbodies. The 1 frb with a stem base does not have scales. The spores are length=10.5-14.2µm (µ=12.0, σ=0.98), width=5.1-7.1µm (µ=6.0, σ=0.51), Q=1.7-2.3µm (µ=2.01, σ=0.16), n=25. This does not key out in Horak's revision. It should be noted that Horak appears to have the identity of Berkley's Secotium gunii confused. It was listed by Cooke in his list of Australian fungi as "sulphur springs, Tasmania", collected by Gunn (A Tasmanian collector). From the Berkeley material held at Kew It is clearly secotioid (Setcheliogaster?) and with spores spores 7 x 4. Cunningham in 1924 says "Sulphur Springs, Rotorua NZ" but it is unclear if that was taken from the type label or an assumption. If it is Rotorua then we can assume the type was with a myrtaceous host and Descolea/Descomyces appear to be quite host limited. However it seems most likley that D. gunni is an Australian species, possibly a Setcheliogaster and not referable to any of the material identified under this name in NZ which is consistently not secotioid and with much larger spores. Horak mentions a ring visible on the type but I believe the type, and its origins, require re-examination. It is not visible in photos of the preserved type. This material with Nothofagus.
