Sessile disc, pale lemon when fresh, brighter yellow when dry, receptacle with white bloom; excipulum (squash) of angular to globose, thick-walled agglutinated cells, outer layer of thin-walled, smooth, 0-septate hair-like elements. Asci about 60-65 x 7-8 µm, clavate-cylindric, tapering to small, rounded apex, wall slightly thickened, small J+ plug at apex, 8-spored; ascospores 8.5-10.5 x 2-2.5 µm, oblong-elliptic, flat one side, slightly curved, tapering slightly to both rounded ends. Not obviously associated with a Chlara state.
Public Note:
PDD 111237, PDD 82951, PDD 98712, PDD 59157, PDD 116723 all represent the same species (identical ITS sequences, matching GenBank MH921847), all collected from fallen Knightia leaves. Based on the key in Lowen and Dumont (1984, https://doi.org/10.1080/00275514.1984.12023945), this fungus matches Calycellina dennisii and C. populina morphologically. Only C. populina has sequences in GenBank; these differ from the NZ species. it is known only from fallen Knightia leaves.
