Public Note:
Related to Hygrophoropsis umbriceps sensu Horak and Podoserpula pusio NZ. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, hyaline in KOH, dextrinoid and appearing thick-walled in melzers. 4-spored. Pileus a cutis of smooth, clamped hyphae, with yellow content in melzers, 5-10um diam. No cystidia observed. Spores in melzers length=4.5–5.4µm (µ=4.9, σ=0.24), width=2.4–3.4µm (µ=3.1, σ=0.26), Q=1.4–2.1µm (µ=1.60, σ=0.17), n=18. In KOH length=4.7–6.0µm (µ=5.2, σ=0.34), width=2.9–3.7µm (µ=3.3, σ=0.21), Q=1.4–1.8µm (µ=1.58, σ=0.13), n=20. basidia 40 x 5um. This is Cantharellus insignis which Reid thought a Podoserpula. Corner says: Spores 5-6-5 X 3-3-4um, smooth, obtuse, hyaline to distinctly yellowish in alkali under the microscope. Basidia 40-50um long; ?2-spored. Hymenium ? thickening slightly; cystidia none. Hyphae 3-10um wide, clamped, the walls slightly thickened. Massee: Erect, more or less tufted, sometimes grown together, 3-4 cm. long, about 2.5 cm. broad ; pileus fan - shaped, tan - colour, irregularly striate, margin lobed and wavy, flesh thin; hymenium waxy, rugulose, darker than the pileus; stem slender, expanding upwards into the pileus, tan-colour ; spores elliptical, tinged brown, 2.5-3 x 1.5um. I'd say this is sufficiently close to C. insignis, and it does indeed ned a combination in Podoserpula, and Hygrophoropsis umbriceps sensu Horak is a another related species. PDD collections (and Kew Type) need examination for dextrinoid spores.
