Specimen notes
Public Note:
bruised gills staining pink in fresh material (in field), then rapidly orange/brown. Context becoming orange/tan on bruising. Taste mild. Milk white, cloudy. Gills thick and crumbly, with lamellulae. McNabb's description and painting of the gills of L. nz as salmon may be misleading as dried paratypes do not show that (type not available at time of writing), and the spores of the paratype of L.nz and material of L. sepiaceus show little difference in coarseness of reticulation. Cap amyloid elements not seen. Cap hairs of the sepiaceus type. Stem hairs not pronounced. Only younger, smaller cap shows brown edge to gills. This material shows cheilocystidia like cap hairs. No macrocystidia seen. Spores length=7.3-9.1µm (µ=8.2, σ=0.44), width=5.8-7.8µm (µ=7.0, σ=0.41), Q=1.1-1.3µm (µ=1.19, σ=0.05), n=20, ornamentation to 0.8um.
