Public Note:
stem distinct and lateral and with fine purple fuzz. Taste mild. Gill edge entire. Without veil when young. Whole fruitbody purplish. Gills without lamellulae, purplish in young material but fading with time. Cap to 13cm diameter. Spores inamyloid. Known previously only from North Island. Cap with external brown encrustation, clamped. Gills with masses of pleuro and cheilocystidia vesiculouse acuminate, and also lageniform cystidia. Not tissue amyloid or dextrinoid. Gills with oleiferous hyphae. Thickened ends to spores are slightly cyanophilous. Spores length=4.1-5.0µm (µ=4.6, σ=0.2), width=1.9-2.6µm (µ=2.2, σ=0.2), Q=1.9-2.4µm (µ=2.1, σ=0.2), n=20. On fresh material the cystidia look metuloid and I thought perhaps this was a Hohenbuehelia, but the cystidia are thin-walled and there are no signs of gloeosphex cystidia. This is clearly a Panus sesnu stricto, and surely not too far away from P. conchatus (not funnel shaped, spores slightly different, and gills paler). with DNA tube. Sequence confirms nearest relative in Genbank is Panus conchatus and sister group to Neolentinus.
