Public Note:
large fruitbody, cap to 25cm, stem 8cm diameter x 15cm. identical to 11285. Cap clay buff, gills greenish yellow. As I suspected with JAC11285 this is closer to B. reticulatus and is identical to 'B. aff. reticulatus' (Karstenia 2009) from ITS. It would be interesting to know where the Hagley/Riccarton collections of B. edulis sits. However, differences within B. edulis sensu lato ITS sequences are few - 1bp. ITS alone is insufficient to differentiate species in this complex which vary morphologically, have very different hosts, and widely geographically distributed. I'd say that the Christchurch collections of B. edulis with oak are not the same species as the Boletus collected with other hosts in the area - and nothing like as nice to eat!
