Public Note:
cap a cutis of glassy clamped unornamented hyphae with acuminate pilocystidia. Cheilocystidia acuminate. With band of caulocystidia high on stem, and brown fibrils at base, otherwise stem smooth. This does not have the micro features of M. otagensis. This is the same as a previous collection of a taxon I have filed as Marasmiellus omphalodes. Cheilocystidia 90x10um. No tissue amyloid or dextrinoid (including cap hairs). Spores clumping. This is another of those taxa where spores start of elongate and then fatten up. length=9.1–14.3µm (µ=11.3, σ=1.6), width=4.9–5.9µm (µ=5.4, σ=0.4), Q=1.8–2.5µm (µ=2.1, σ=0.3), n=10. Sequence places this distant from Gymnopus and M. juniperus. Needs confirmation because sequence is remote from anything but perhaps vaguley near Lyophyllaceae. Not M. omphaloides as the type of that has no cystidia and the cap hairs are thick-walled, yellow in KOH and thickening towards base. Incidentally, M. oreades doesn't belong in Marasmius - not Marasmiellus either. Perhaps the genus Scorteus needs resurrecting [subsequent to this note it was resurrected by Redhead]
