Specimen notes
Public Note:
There are extensive notes by Theresa who did not find spores. They are tan with flat tubercles. So this is definitely a Boletopsis. Doesn't fit Stalper's (1993 CBS) B. leucomelaena or B. grisea. 'North American Fungi' 2008 looks at molecular distinction of 4 taxa present in US - leucomelaena, grisea, smithii, perplexa. Except all appear to be associated with conifers, and this site had no conifers. The sequences from this paper support a 'grisea' (with a subsquomsa) and a perplexa (also with subsquamosa). B. leucomelaena is all over the place and the NZ taxon is distinct and most close to this. This was definitely with beech. US 'B. leucomalaena' can be with Quercus etc. This is clearly an indigenous and rare taxon. No Boletopsis recorded from Australia. Known in North Pacific. [JAC]. Probably should have a tag name. 'nothofagi' sp. nov. Spores measured on bounding box: length=4.5–5.4µm (µ=4.9, σ=0.37), width=3.4–4.4µm (µ=3.9, σ=0.46), Q=1.0–1.6µm (µ=1.27, σ=0.23), n=4.
