Specimen notes
Public Note:
Rubbery. Gleba with structure, olivaceous and drying black. Peridium light with blue/green patches but bruising red, thick and thickly gelatinous, including gelatinous layer then 0.1-0.2mm, excluding gelatinous layer then 700um. With thick rhizoids. Smell very strong of wintergreen + garlic. KOH slowly yellow. FeSO4 instantly black. Occasional sutures through peridium but not obvious - but not like Protubera spp I've seen, and better here than Hysterangium, no glebal core so not Mesophelia. Spores length=5.8–7.1µm (µ=6.3, σ=0.4), width=2.9–3.6µm (µ=3.2, σ=0.2), Q=1.8–2.2µm (µ=2.0, σ=0.2), n=10. Close to P. nothofagi and/or G. eburnea but reddening peridium and strong wintergreen smell makes it different. See Castellano and Beaver NZJB v34. ITS confirms on edge of Gallacea but different to G. eburnea.
