Specimen notes
Public Note:
cap encrusted with debris but not sticky, even when moistened? Smell floury. Gills with numerous lamellulae, relatively short stemmed. Peeling 1/4. Gills and flesh mild. Slight astringent after taste. FeSO4 pink, guaiac nil. Spore print A - white. [PL] "I think of this as being more robust and whiter". [JAC] are all the Hinewai 'australis' actually multicystidiata? [JAC Aug 2010] Cap an ixocutis. A very few refractive cystidia in cap centre. Gill cystidia very plentiful. Spores length=9.3–11.5µm (µ=10.4, σ=0.8), width=8.2–10.4µm (µ=9.2, σ=0.6), Q=1.0–1.3µm (µ=1.1, σ=0.1), n=11. Pat says "spores show reticulation so maybe allochroa?" Spores do seem similar to type of R. allochroa. Have the gills on this material dried orange? If allochroa then hot taste is not a good character and the distinction between allochroa and australis is perhaps questionable - as Egon mentions in McNabb's paper. Although it should be noted that McNabb's description does not say allochrous is hot, but bitter. Changed to australis on basis of sequences. [JAC Sept 2011] SV+ve, quite clearly, in 4 samples from 2 caps.
