Specimen notes
Public Note:
In immature material flesh continuous into stipe - no membrane. In mature material a spongy sterile base present. Peridium with deciduous spines. Capillitium of Bovista type - with many tapering terminal elements. Spores with long straight sterigmal remnants (to 16um). Kew nowhere. Threads branched and attached to peridium wall. Capilllitium with small hyaline spots (pits?), spores minutely verrucose length=4.4–5.6µm (µ=4.9, σ=0.4), n=16. Cunningham to Lycoperdon glabrescens, although his image shows a fungus with a much stronger rooting base, and is supposed to have larger sterile layer. Others regional possibilities are L. gunnii, asperum. Morganella sensu stricto is supposed not to have a true capillitium at maturity, and this does.
