Specimen notes
Public Note:
The dominant Amanita that precedes Boletus edulis and Xerocomus on this site in early to mid summer. Following Fungi Europaea vol 9 ... Cap margin not grooved. Smell and taste raphanoid, spores amyloid (subgenus lepidella). Margin without appendiculate remnants of veil (section volvatae). Veil leaving patches and warts on the cap (subsection validae). Stem base subbulbous without veilar remnants (series validae). Flesh not reddening. Some of the caps here have felty patches as well as the warts visible in the photo. Like the previous collection the stem above the ring is very striate, and below is felty grey. Conc & dilute H2SO4 on flesh and particularly the outer surface of bulb giving pinkish colour with time - but not violet as some texts say. The supposed violet reaction isn't mentioned in FE9. Aqueous phenol pink with time. Most texts have conifers as dominant host and broadleaves second. In UK basidio checklist the common host is mentioned as oak. Do the UK oak associated 'spissa' have flesh violet with H2S04? Or is this a variable reaction? New record for New Zealand. Reported to MAF 2/07/2010
