Specimen notes
Public Note:
Specimen determination needs checking with respect to Vizzini et al 2016 doi 10.1007/s11557-016-1213-9
P.R. Johnston, 2016/08/10
Public Note:
pores length=17.9–20.5µm (µ=19.1, σ=0.8), width=9.7–11.8µm (µ=11.0, σ=0.6), Q=1.7–2.0µm (µ=1.7, σ=0.1), n=12. Spores too small for P. austrogeaster (24-27x14-16). The single collection of this from NZ requires re-evaluation, as it came from close to this site ... and indeed it was misidentified, spores too small. This collection has a sequence closer to USA material than that sequenced by Peter. Danish material in genbank has some suspicious looking insertions. This material is closer to USA. I'm not convinced that differences are that significant, and if if sequencing errors removed then perhaps very little between them. [Aug 2016] paper by Vizzini et al introduces P. oceanica. The character of excipulum layers to distinguish Peziza doesn't work (UK historical separation of varia/cerea now treated as synonyms). Many of my specimens are not reddish brown and they do open star shaped. Sequence data says this is not P. oceanica (close) and still closer to a sequence from Denmark and USA, both not included in the paper! 25 base pair difference to P. oceanica (96%). Spores in ammophila 16-18 x 9.5-11, P. oceanica 18-22 x 10-12, so this character does at least fit for P. oceanica. Why didn't vizzini include Tasmanian material of P. austrogeaster?
