Specimen notes
Public Note:
cap aeriferous, not dark in KOH. Spores pale tan, with blunt spines, basidia not siderophilous, spores not cyanophilous. Cap tissue not dark in KOH. Cap a cutis. 4-spored, without germ pore. No chrysocystidia - no cystidia seen. No tissue amyloid. Sub-pellis and stem tissue slightly vinaceous in melzers, clamped, with oleiferous hyphae. Spores look like Thelephoraceae! If pink then maybe Lepista but they are tan. Spores 4.7-5.4(5) SD0.2 n= 7 x 3.4-4.2(3.8) SD0.3 n=5, Q=1.3. Ripartites? However cap lacks peripheral hairs and not deeply umbonate. FAN 3 lumps all together in a continuum under R. tricholoma from helomorphus with no hairs through to tricholoma with hairs. The spores of this collection would come out between tricholoma krieglsteineri (but this bigger) but has bigger spines than both (note that Pegler & Young show much more tuberculate spores for Ripartites). Looks ok for taxon pictured in B&K3. But see also Hygroaster and Omphaliaster (nauseodulcis, kyrtosporus). But for Baroni Mycologia v74 Omphaliaster has darker colours and for Bigelow Beihefte Nova Hed v51 it is clamped and brown or grey/brown. There doesn't seem to be much of a consensus here. Reported to MAF 2/07/2010[2013] dried material looks suspiciously laccaria-like.
