Specimen notes
Public Note:
cap 7-9cm, white with sepia/fuscous black adpressed fibrils. Convex then upturned without umbo. Stem white, equal but enlarged slightly towards base, basal hyphae white. Stem 4-5cm x 15mm. Partial veil over gills persisting, elastic, on stem remaining as large ring either hanging or upturned, edge fimbriate, smooth or very faintly grooved. Smell slightly oily, taste slightly acidic. Schaeffers negative. KOH strongly yellow. Xanthodermati. Flesh on expsorure immediately very faintly yellow and then browning slightly, especially in stem apex. Same as 9481? Without cheilocystidia. In Kerrigan keys to praeclaresquamosus and treats meleagris as a synomym but that has cheilocystidia. Spores thick walled 6x4um, without germ pore. I'd say this is the same taxon as pictured by taylor - but does that have cheilocystidia? Even if this is praeclaresquamosus there is some debate, see Callac Mycologia, 97(2), 2005, pp. 416–424. The correct name for this is moelleri, unless this really is sensu Kerrigan (which is bigger in stature) in which case it doesn't have a name. A pacific coastal redwood species. Interesting to note that Sanchez (fungi non delineati 24) indicates that only constant characters in Agaricus are odour of intact fruitbody (not bruised), discolouration, form of annulus, cheilocystidia, KOH/Schaeffer. All other characters, including colour, are too variable. Recent work suggest praeclaresquomosus and meleagris as synonyms and variable. A. rotalis has different sequence (as rotalis and A. endoxanthus), but part of the same group.
