Specimen notes
Public Note:
taste mild, with ring zone, umbonate, brown fibrils, taste mild, smell none, spores inamyloid (actually very weakly so) spores 9 x 6um. Clamp connections definitely absent, cap an ixotrichoderm. Seems halfway between Pat Leonard's wangapeka and puhutihuti but not either. Sequences place it near to T. curtisoccus and T. pardinum in a clade within matsutake and caligatum. Material to pat 05/12/2011. Originally id as 'Greyney's, but doesn't agree with sequence of fz2010/0774. Pat's notes: cap 20mm diam, stem with sheathing ring, 25mm x 5-8mm. Spores ellipsoid 7.8+-0.8 x 5.9+-0.65um, Q=1.14-1.6 av 1.33+-0.11. PP cutis at edge a trichoderm. [JAC] pilepellis, irregular, semi-gelatinised, with trichodermal elements, to 100um, cylindrical, to 5um thick. Surface hyphae with brown plasmatic pigment. Sub-cutis with a few oleiferous hyphae. Lamellar trama parallel. Epidermal hyphae with some hyaline zebroid encrustation in Melzers, not visible in KOH. Unclamped. 4-spored. With bundles of caulocystidia above ring zone. Spores hyaline, inamyloid, with strong refractive content in KOH (cf Callistosporium). Basidia with similar refractive content, to 50 x 10, sterigma 7 x 2 at base. Spores length=7.4–9.2µm (µ=8.2, σ=0.50), width=5.6–7.1µm (µ=6.2, σ=0.39), Q=1.2–1.4µm (µ=1.31, σ=0.08), n=20. With distinct cylindrical apiculus, 1.5um, flat-topped. Sequence is suspicious. Do again.
