Specimen notes
Public Note:
[2006] Has white gill edge from cheilocystidia, and small but distinct lateral stem. Cap a loose trichoderm, macroscopically hairy. Spores pale tan (in KOH), slightly dextrinoid in Melzers, amygdaliform-ovoid 9x6um and with small but distinct germ pore (not Crepidotus?), 4-spored. Terminal cap hyphae with numerous septa and often with large clamps, hyaline but slightly dextrinoid in Melzers. Cheilocystidia lageniform, cylindrical. No pleurocystidia. Egon says see ZT2087. I think this is a Pleuroflammula and not a Crepidotus. In Egon's key this comes close to P. dussi which is type of the genus - but Egon in his paper says this possibly closer to Melanotus! Smith (North American Crepidotus) also to P. dussi (or C. haustellaris= Simocybe haustellaris). For Watling the latter not stipitate and 2-spored. What about Simocybe ovalis (maybe = Crepidotus amarus). These are bitter, but perhaps a bit small. [Apr. 2016] Sequences of this species are just 2bp different to the recently described S. rhabarbarina. This was described from a park in Italy on Tilia and described as endemic. The morphology agrees in all respects, especially the bitter taste, however the Italian species is described as 2-spored and all NZ collections are convincingly 4-spored. The species may be an introduction to NZ, but it's preference for Sophora may indicate otherwise. The Italian collection must be a 2-spored variant of the same species.
