Specimen notes
Public Note:
Cap 2.5-7cm diam., dry pruniose, clay-buff - blood red. Pores yellow, darkening. Stem 0.6-1.2mm with blood red dots on yellow background. Smells like 'suillus'. Flesh bruising strongly blue. Stem cortex yellow-red, same as cap. No zebra incrustations in cap hyphae (terminal elements or sub-pellis). No red platelets on cap hyphae in congo red. Spores are tan, not truncate, and have a suggestion of ridges under DIC, Q=2.6, width = 5um. Doesn't key from FM3(3), or Funga Nordica. Nearest in FM3(3) is X. armeniacus (not according Egon Horak). FM9(3) also does not key. Nearest is X. ripariellus, except that with smooth stem (according to Hills key, but not his text!), or X. cisalpinus, except that with Quercus not Populus. Amyloid hyphae in stem base not found (present in cisalpinus, but not easy to find). Perhaps one of the several US species with this colour? X. rubellus has spores with Q=2.3 and zebroid cap hyphae incrustation. Given the marsh habitat I'd say this is closer to X. ripariellus than anything else, but a tentative identification. Reported to MAF 2/07/2010. Loaned to Kunming March 2011.
