Specimen notes
Public Note:
Cap 2-5.5cm slightly depressed, cracking radially vinaceous-grey with purple. Some showing yellow-chrome, pruinose when small, smooth with maturity. Gills B to F at maturity, lamellulae rare. Stem 0.5-1cm x 1.5-4cm rose coloured at each end to purplish in middle. Gills not acrid. Pat L says 'check thick walled cystidia or dermatocystidia'. Pleurocystidia thin walled, with pilocystidia. Spores with small amyloid spot. Without DCY/SV, without fuchsinophile hyphae. PL: "I think this is R. griseoviolacea. There are only 6 Russulas that combine purple in the cap with coloured stipes. We can eliminate R. tricholomopsis as the pp and gill colour are wrong. R. tawai and R. macrocystidiata can be eliminated because they have at least some distinctly thick walled cystidia. R. pilocystidiata has dermatocystidia which rules it out. There is no FeS04 result which would eliminate R. roseostipitata, but, the stipe of your specimen is more purple than rosy red, the spores have clear connectives. So I am inclined towards R. griseoviolacea by this process of elimination. My only concern is over the pp images, they fit R. griseoviolacea well, but there should be at least some long cuticular hair like hyphae and they are not there and I could not find them in my section either. I think that the ochraceous patches on the cap are probably also a good clue for this species." [JAC] perhaps violaceous finely reticulate stem colour is characteristic? Has clear pilocystidia. However, changed ID again because of sequences.
