Specimen notes
Public Note:
17th Fungal Foray of New Zealand; On upper surface of a dead nikau frond near the midrib. Ascomata dark, sunken in the frond tissue, slight surface bulges occurring where ostioles open through the frond epidermis. Asci unitunicate, with the ascus apical ring bluing in Melzer\lquotes reagent, containing 8 (often fewer seen), hyaline, biseriate to multiseriate, long, curving, narrowly fusoid ascospores which taper gradually from a median septum to pointed apices, 50-60 X 3-3.5 µm. Ann\lquotes herbarium number is 830. It fits Oxydothis selenosporellae Samuels & Rossman (Mycotaxon 28: 461-471, 1987) quite well. Worth noting is that many ascospores had more than the median septum \endash often the bicells being divided again and sometimes these also. A number of ascospores also had large uniseriately arranged vacuoles which were sometimes associated with pseudosepta. These weren\lquotet usually confused with true septa, except when they occurred near the ascospore extremities.
