Specimen notes
Public Note:
15th Fungal Foray of New Zealand.
Public Note:
Dry apothecia with Cyathicula-like macro appearance, somewhat translucent yellow-brown, stipe paler, glabrous.
PRJ, July 2022
Public Note:
PDD 45597, PDD 56854, PDD 74276 represent the same species. They are all on partly decomposed Metrosideros leaves. The macroscopic appearance of the glabrous apothecia and an excipulum of long-celled elements in paralell rows embedded in thick gel, are morphologically characteristic of Cyathicula. The ascospores are distinctive, having a thick gel sheath when fresh, this appearing to shrink during storage and forming fine striate ornamentation on the outside of the spore wall. Ascospores about 14-18 x 6-8 µm, broad elliptic-fusoid, tapering to narrow rounded ends, radially symmetrical, 0-septate, hyaline. No DNA sequences; fungi with Cyathicula-like excipular anatomy seem to be spread phylogentically across Helotiales.
