Specimen notes
Public Note:
Frank Hill's specimen number LYN 16909 is linked to two PDD specimens, PDD 69490 and PDD 70680. PDD 69490 is a dried specimen and PDD 70680 dried cultures from ICMP 13749, putatively grown from PDD 69490. PDD 69490 has fruiting bodies typical of Coleophoma camelliae, but other fungi are also present. The protologue of Coleophoma camelliae cites CBS H-22474 as the holotype (although Frank Hill's LYN 16909 number is not cited this number is recorded in CBS files, email from Ewald Groenewald, 9 March 2017) and ex-type culture CBS 101376. Thus CBS 101376 and ICMP 13749 should be the same fungus. However, the DNA from ICMP 13749 is a Tiarosporella sp., and the dried culture in PDD 70680 has a morphology typical of Tiarosporella. There are several different fungi present on PDD 69490 - apparently Frank cultured more than one of these, and inadvertently deposited different fungi in CBS and ICMP. Thus, PDD 69490 is an isotype of Coleophoma camelliae, while ICMP 13749 is a different fungus. Another possibility is that ICMP 13749 was mislabelled by Frank and was actually LYN 16490 (PDD 69412), Tiarosporella ex Desmoschoenus - the monocot host would make more sense biologically.
