Specimen notes
Public Note:
Horak examined type of austrovanacea: Pileus 10-20 mm diam., convex , then depressed and becoming concave in the center, margin recurved , wavy; lilac brown center, a strongly reddish violet at the fluted edge; dry hygrophanous, membranous, margin furrowed on mature specimens. Lamellae broadly adnate - decurrent, arcuate, packed (L-15 , I-5 ); pale purplish brown, fimbriate edge, purplish brown. Stipe 25-60 x 1-2 mm, cylindrical, equal; apex purple, brown purplish at base, with basal rhizoids, concolorous; dry, smooth, hollow , fragile, isolated and cespitose. Context purplish. Slightly smell like radishes or absent; flavor absent. Spores 5-7 x 2.5-4um ellipsoidal , hyaline, smooth , amyloid. Basidia 20-30 x 5-7um , 4 - spored. Cheilo 20-40 x 7-20um, clavate to ventricose, with conspicuous projections fingerlike or dendroidal, thin-walled, with brown plasmatic (KOH ). Cuticle surface consists of a cylindrical hyphae, prostrate, with a few short projections, cylindrical (2-5um diam.), not gelatinsed, subcutis of subglobose cells oval, purplish brown pigment or plasma. Clamped. On wood and litter. Note that neither Singer nor Horak indicate a pigmented gill edge or pleurocystidia, and the cheilo of NZ material are irregular, and not regular like Horak's figure. M. austroavenacea sensu Segedin is not sensu stricto. This material, like PDD56574, is identical to M. lividorubra.
