Specimen notes
Public Note:
Culture from GJS 73-205 American Type Culture Collection (ATCC): ATCC 36091 and CBS 135907, CBS 333.77
Public Note:
CBS 333.77 (ex PDD 32658) accepted by Hou et al. 2023 as P. multisptatum based on DNA sequences, although morphologically typical of Hydropisphaera erubescens (Hou et al. 2023)
Public Note:
There is some confusion about identity of two CBS cultures putatively from PDD 32658 (GJS 73-205), CBS 333.77 and CBS 135907. DNA sequences from CBS 333.77 match Paracylindrocarpon multispetatum, whereas those from CBS 135907 match P. aloicola. PDD 32658 was identified morphologically by Samuels as Nectria erubescens (= Hydropisphaera erubescens; spores smooth-walled, 3-septate, 18-26 x 4-6 µm), quite distinct from P. multiseptatum (spores with striate walls, 5-7-septate, 28-38 x 4-6 µm), making it unlikely that the sequences from CBS 333.77 accurately represent PDD 32658. There has probably been a mixup in numbering or cross-contamination of this culture at some stage. DNA sequences from CBS 135907 match Paracylindrocarpon aloicola, phylogenetically close to Hydropisphaera erubescens sensu Samuels (e.g. ATCC 36092, GenBank AF193229), although H. erubescens is phylogentically distant from Hydropisphaeria sensu Hou et al. (2023). P. aloicola is known only from its asexual state, making a morphological comparison with H. erubescens difficult. GJS 73-205 was also stored as ATCC 36091, but there are no DNA sequences available for this culture.
