Pileus: 10.5cm diam., rather matte-tomentose, centrally depressed, dry to viscid, slightly rugulose patterned, greyish brown, brownish grey rather sooty in places; margins not marked. GILLS: crowded, pallid creamy with faint yellowish orange tints, lamellae simple, lamellulae present, numerous, sometimes in some sequence, to 5mm deep. STIPE: 4cm, 2cm diam. apically, 1.8cm basally, i.e. sligtly tapering, dry, smoth, more or less concolorous with pileus, finely pruinose, flesh white, unchanging. CONTEXT OF PILEUS: white, firm, unchanging. CHEMICAL CHARACTERS: formalin on context - faintly salmon pink; phenol - slowly deep vinaceous; FeSO4 - faint salmon (not greenish); guaicol on stipe base - brick red-orange, darkening to deep rusty ornage; KOH on pileus and context n.r. NH4OH on pileus and context n.r. TASTE: context and gills - not distinctive. HABITAT: gregarious under Nothofags menziesii, nelson, Umere, 2.1.1969, Coll. R.F.R. McNabb
