Specimen notes
Public Note:
[McNabb:] Holotype = #31 (group 8), same as #20, 25, 63, 76, 214, 285. PILEUS: In all respects typical of the species but some fructs show a conspicuous faintly greenish-yellow colour in the centre of the pileus where it is normally a dark reddish-brown. This is possibly a dry weather variation. SPORE PRINT; Crawshay E wheen fresh. HABITAT: solitary or in pairs under Leptospermum ericoides, Auckland, Titirangi Atkinson Park, 7/3/67, Coll, R.F.R. McNabb. Cuticle composed of erect hair-like hyphae, relatively short to 50um long, tapering apically, thin-walled, septate or aseptate, without coloured contents in KOH, arising from inflated short-celled hyphae which resemble sphaerocysts at times but are not true sphaerocysts. Pilocystidia absent. Cuticle of stipe composed of repent, interwoven hyphae, thin-walled, septate 1.5-4.5um diam., caulocystidia absent giving rise to a loose palisade of hair-like hyphae similar to those of pileus, soon disorganised however. Spores broadly elliptical to elliptical [sic], obliquely apiculate, apiculus to 1.5um long 9.1-11.2 x 8.1 – 9.1um. ornamentation of amyloid or partially amyloid ridges to 1.4(-1.8)um high forming an almost complete reticulum, rather sparse. Plage present, rather conspicuous. Cheilocystidia present, similar to pleurocystidia but shorter, numerous to rare on gill edge. Oleiferous hyphae absent, trama heteromerous. Basidia clavate, 4-spored, sterigmata to 7um long 39-51 x 11.2 – 15.4um. Pleurocystidia numerous, scattered, projecting to 30um beyond basidia, apices acuminate or protracted, capitulate, narrow fusiform to fusiform, slightly thick-walled often, contents sparse 66-91 x 8.4-10.5um [Ridley:] Basidiospores 8.2-9.25 x 7-8 um, [9-11 x 8-9.5 um] Qm 1.21, broadly ellipsoid, Q 1.15-1.28, broadly ellipsoid hyaline. Ornamented with sparse to moderately crowded, acute, amyloid verrucae and crests, to 0.75 um high single or in small confluent groups, joined by low to moderately low, fine, amyloid ridges occasionally isolated forming an almost complete reticulum. Suprahilar plage inconspicuous inamyloid, smooth, c. 2.75 um wide. Hilar appendix obconical, oblique, to 2 um long. (Fig. 29a). McNabb described the plage as inconspicuous, however it can be very difficult to distinguish it with the light microscope. ln the SEM the plage appeared roughened although it was inamyloid. The ornamentation was type IIIA to IIIB. [Cooper:] Stem without coloured fibrils. With a few lamellulae but not in a series. With basal interveining. SV-ve. Cap without refractive cystidia in KOH. Terminal elements thin, some acuminate, plus septate hairs. Cap has a vinaceous sub-cutis. No spore print (although not that packer of type of R. macrocystidiata contains a spore print labelled #31). Spores taken from clump on gill. They appear to have a faint dextrinoid reaction of spore base (not the amyloid ornamentation). With plage and occasional pale violet spot. Note that McNabb decided collections under Nothofagus could be different due to different spore ornamentation. Spores length=7.9–9.7µm (µ=8.9, σ=0.4), width=6.3–7.6µm (µ=6.9, σ=0.3), Q=1.2–1.4µm (µ=1.28, σ=0.06), n=20, ornamentation to 1.8um.
