PILEUS: 5-8.5 cm diam., centrally depressed, becoming infundibulifrom, glabrous, no indication of velar remnants, rather viscid in wet weather, pruinose to subvelutinate under lens, dark red black in centre (c 12E4-F4) with c SE4 tints towards margins. In some fructs there are definite yellowish-brown colours. Margins entire, not radially marked. GILLS: pallid creamy white, moderately crowded, mod. thick, to 8 mm deep, not discoloured at maturity, lamellae simple, very occasionally forked close to stipe, not forked near margins, lamellulae absent. STIPE: 3-4.5 cm long, tapering slightly basally, to 1.7 cm diam apically, to 1 cm diam. basally, dry, dolid, annulus absent, no indications of velar remnants, pruinose-granular under lens, greyish-red, (c 12C3-4 to 12D3-4). Flesh white, firm, unchanging. CONTEXT OF PILEUS: white, firm, unchanging. SMELL; TASTE, gills and context not distinctive. SPORE PRINT poor but about Crawshay C when fresh. CHEMICAL REACTIONS: Formalin on context - no reaction. Phenol on context - slowly deep red, vinaceous. FeSO4 on context - rapidly salmon pink. Guiaiacol on stipe base - rapidly salmon pink becoming pinkish-orange. KOH on pileus - orange. KOH on context - no reaction NH4OH on pileus and context - no reactions. HABITAT: Gregarious under Leptospermum ericoides, Auckland, Titirangi Reserve, 13/4/67, Coll. R.F.R. McNabb.
