Specimen notes
Public Note:
Phoma phormicola is an unpublished herbarium name used by Cooke on the label of his specimen 134 (collected on Phormium tenax from Stewart Island, duplicates in Kew and PDD 238). Based on an examination of the Kew duplicate, Grove (1921) considered this to be a synonym of Leptothyrium phormii, a species decribed from Phormium in cultivation in Belgium. Grove’s description suggests a fungus morphologically close to Pirostoma viridisporum, with subcuticular, black fruiting bodies, distinguished by conidial size (smaller in L. phormii). Examination of PDD 238 showed an acervular fungus, yellowish conidial ooze exposed after covering host tissue splits open, with conidia about 21-26 x 4-4.5 µm, cylindric, straight, apex broadly rounded, hyaline, 0-septate.
