Specimen notes
Public Note:
This stubble was collected about eight months after winter wheat cv. Stephens was harvested. The fallow was no-till (chemical fallow) and was yet not planted to a new crop of wheat. Stubble showing pseudothecia of the unidentified Lophodermium species occurred almost entirely in the wheel tracks of the combine, where stubble was lying flat on the soil surface. Similar observations were made during April-May each year from 1992 to 1996. Winter wheat foliage exhibited symptoms of physiological leaf spot during most of those years. Pseudothecia were observed on prostrate straw and chaff, leaf debris, and the rachis. None were on standing straw between combine wheel tracks. The pseudothecia appear sometime during late winter or early spring, at least six or more months following harvest. None are observed during late autumn, even during wet years in which straw and soil have been wet for about two months before winter sets in.
