Specimen notes
Public Note:
Not sure if immature plates with white hymenium is the same as the ones with multiple tiers and brown hymenium. DNA 6E old brown collection, 6H fresh white collection. Note this is not the same as other NZ G. australe and less common. Also in South America like the other version, but perhaps not Australia (except with beech I expect). It would be interesting to know where our podocarp Ganodermas sit. Digging back into the history of the name G. australe then it initially seems to have been based on (lost) collection(s) by the Dane Morten Wormskjold from 'the Pacific'. He joined the expedition ship Rurik which sailed the Pacific - from Chile north and back, with Workskjold being evicted in Kamchatka. 'Australe' could have come from anywjere in the north orsouth pacific, but perhaps the Marshall Islands.. The name was picked up in a European sense by Fries et al, again for various non-southern taxa. So I think without modern typification the name remains ambiguous. Amongst the accepted synonyms then a few have more local origins. It is a pity none of the material in this paper was sequenced: Smith BJ, Sivasithamparam K (2003) Morphological studies of Ganoderma (Ganodermataceae) from the Australasian and Pacific regions. Aust Syst Bot 16:487–503.
