Specimen notes
Public Note:
[NS] in loose overlapping clusters on trail bank, from soil under beech. Cap 11-51 mm across, zonate, with pale tan/beige growing margin, brown to dark brown towards disc, staining brown when handled, young caps with pools of red juice, surface soft, minutely pubescent. Spines dense, very short ~0.25-0.5 mm long, brown with lighter tips, stipe lateral, to off-center, 9-17 mm long, 1-4 mm thick, mycelial threads light brown, flesh dark brown, faintly zonate, odor and taste slightly farinaceous. KOH appearing black, dark greenish black with paper wipe test. [JAC] Spores brown, trama green in KOH.
