Public Note:
[WMD] The cap of these fruit bodies is dark brown in colour with a very smooth surface. All of the caps in this grouping had an upturned margin. The gills are mustard-tan and attached. The stipe is distinctly swollen, 15-25 mm in diameter tapering to 10-15 mm towards the base. The stipe surface is brown and lightly fibrous with some fibres appearing clumped in small raised scales. Fruit bodies were observed growing up to 7.5 cm in diameter and 6.5 cm in height. Growing on soil amongst totara litter. cf. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/6531930 The species (observation #6531930) was also fruiting again in the exact same location as last year with a similar appearance (caps dark black-brown, flattish with a concentric ring around the margin). This new observation is about 20 metres away and the caps are lighter in colour with a more upturned ‘frilly’ margin and unusual stipe. The spore size is similar and may be the same species with just a different macro-morphology.
