Public Note:
There are some morphological differences between new/old world descriptions of 'P. pusillus' which have long been recognised in the historical literature. Chew & Desjardin believe Old World use of P. pusillus is a misidentification of P. luxifilamentus. They recognise the differences as - Panellus pusillus frb size 5-32mm, spores 4-5.5×2-3 μm. P. luxifilamentus frb size 2.5-5mm, spores 3.6-4.4x2.4-2.8, Q=1.63, and the latter with luminous hyphae. In this collection frb size is to 4mm, spore length=3.5-4.0µm (µ=3.7, σ=0.17), width=2.0-2.6µm (µ=2.3, σ=0.21), Q=1.4-1.8µm (µ=1.61, σ=0.13), n=6. Morphologically it is closer to P. luxifilamentus. ITS sequence data for this collection show a16-18bp (2%) different to the type of P. luxifilamentus from Malaysia. That is close, but not the same. The sequence difference between the Malyasian/NZ/Au sequences and typical P. pusillus from the USA is 50-60bp (10%) (The type is from the Carribean) . The Australasian/Asian group are entirely separate well-supported clades and the two linneages do represent at least two different species. The sequence data within the luxifilamentus clade suggest Dictyopanus gloeocystidiatus from Japan may provide an earlier name for P. luxifilamentus. In fact there are several possible earlier names mentioned in the literature for morphologically similar species in the Asian/Australasian region. P. luxifilamentus has not been compared critically with any of them. Some names are recognised under the traditional synonymy of P. pusillus and some are not. The available names include: New World taxa - Gloeoporus pusillus 1844 Carribean, Polyporus rhipidium 1847 USA, Favolus granulosus 1863 Colombia, Polyporus subpulverulentus 1868 USA, Laschia guaranitica 1884 Paraguay. Old world taxa - Polyporus diminutus 1896 Australia, Dictyopanus copelandii 1914 Philipines, Dictyopanus gloeocystidiatus 1954 Japan, Favolus pusillus var. pallidus 1839 Tasmania.
