Specimen notes
Public Note:
S. epilobiii on usual circular lesions whereas S. alpicola distributed (and Hawksworth assumes systemic), but both on Epilobium, and not Fuchsia. S. epilobii pycnidia 48-75um diam, conidia 0-3 septate 25-35 x 1.5-2um. S. alpicola pycnidia 0.1-0.15mm conidia 24-95 x 0.7 - 1.5, 7 septate. S. fuchsiicola conidiomata ? (Sydow doesn't say, just that spots are 3-5mm), conidia 30-60 x 1um and 0 septate. The meaning of S. fuchsiae needs tracking down. In this material conidia are to 60 x 2 and 1-7 septate (use cotton blue in lactic acid + phase contrast), pycnidia 200-300um diam.. This does not fit the concept of S. fuchsiicola and is nearer to S. alpicola. I suspect most NZ records of S. fuchsiicola are this, and it's probably sp. nov. FTA card [from culture]. In culture produces an acrodontium-like state, not phalidic but acropleurogenous on minute denticles. This has been named as Acrodontium podocarpium and assumed to be a culture contaminant.
J.A. Cooper
Public Note:
"The present collection ... clusters within Acrodontium s.str. where it represents a distinct lineage, known from Metrosideros excelsa in New Zealand, clustering with another strain from New Zealand (PDD 105475) originally identified as Septoria alpicola, occurring on Fuchsia excorticata (conidia 60 × 2 µm, 1–7 septate on the specimen). It is apparent that the culture PDD 105475 became contaminated with the fungus described here as Acrodontium podocarpi, which due to its sticky, minute conidia, tends to be a common contaminant in culture collections."
crous & Thangavel, 2018
Public Note:
Crous & Thangavel note that the DNA sequence linked to this specimen matches Acrodontium metrosideri. Cooper illustrates a fungus matching A. metrosideri morphologically (image captioned 'acrodontium-like state?') along with his images of the Septoria sp. - it appears that there are are two fungi in this collection and it is the Acrodontium rather than the Septoria that was cultured and stored as ICMP 20212, the sequence was obtained from the culture.
