Public Note:
[PL] Cap convex, date brown, slightly viscid, 85-110mm diam. Pores minute, golden, reddish with age. Stipe 50 x 15mm, tapering, yellowish brown, but red at apex. Flesh firm, white, blueing very slightly. Spores 7.3-10 x 3-4.5. [JAC] The macro descriptions of Xerocomus nothofagi and Boletus leptospermi are similar, the differences being: leptospermi - pores golden yellow, aging with reddish patches, flesh rapidly blue. Nothofagi - pores yellow with a uniform carmine edge, slowly blueing. The key difference is the spore size/Q. Spores here length=8.7–10.7µm (µ=9.9, σ=0.52), width=3.5–5.1µm (µ=4.2, σ=0.34), Q=2.0–2.9µm (µ=2.39, σ=0.23), n=20T. The description and spores of this material agrees with nothofagi, as does the sequence. 'Xerocomus' nothofagi and 'Boletus' leptospermi now both have a number of records with Kunzea/Leptospermum and Beech, and neither is host restricted. See also recent records of X. rufostipitatus
