From Goto M (1972) Bacterial leaf spot of onions in Japan. Plant Dis Rep 56:490–493 https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015001262743;view=1up;seq=518 The symptoms of bacterial leaf spot of onions found in Japan were water-soaked, yellowish-green lesions with a yellow halo, measuring 5 to 10 x 3 to 5 mm in size, and eventually turning light brown. Abundant exudates were found on the surface of the lesions in the shape of either small white pearls or coiled white fine threads, de- pending on the weather conditions. Soft rot was not induced on onions. The bacteri- um, identified from the bacteriological properties as a pathogenic strain of Pseudo- monas syringae van Hall, was highly pathogenic on Welsh onion and bulb onion, mod- erately pathogenic on shallots, slightly pathogenic on rakkyo (Allium chinense) and peach (Prunus persica). No infection occurred on other plants tested, including var- ious vegetables, citrus, white clover, oat and tobacco.
