Habitat:
Growing as one loose cluster and several scattered outlier plants perched on the southern aspect of a small steep-sided greywacke rock outcrop under a canopy of Kunzea ericoides and Melicytus ramiflorus at the top of a cliff near a small waterfall. The site is exposed and highly drought-prone.
Notes:
Associated species: Overhead canopy dominated by leaning-over kanuka (Kunzea ericoides), and mahoe (Melicytus ramiflorus) with occasional Olearia paniculata and no understorey on the rock outcrop itself. The rock outcrop surfaces are partially clad in a mosaic of lichens and mosses with leather-leaf fern (Pyrrosia eleagnifolia) scattered throughout. The vegetation immediately beside the rock outcrop is dominated by kanuka (Kunzea ericoides), and mahoe (Melicytus ramiflorus) with a very sparse (drought-limited) understorey dominated by Helichrysum lanceolatum and Coprosma rhamnoides over a sparse groundcover of scattered Polystichum neozelandicum subsp. zerophyllum and extensive areas of leaf litter and mosses over loose rock rubble. Substrate: Rupestral, growing without any soil or loose substrate material apart from patchy mosses and lichens over bare rock. Population size: A loose cluster of c. 50 plants within a 2 m radius

Melicytus ramiflorus
