Habitat:
Sited on a moderately steep (17deg) western facing slope under a broken canopy of regenerating conifer broadleaf forest. Canopy height of 5-6m on average. Dominated by kanuka (Kunzea robusta), with emergent miro (Prumnopitys ferruginea) and totara (Podocarpus totara). Sub-canopy layer of Pseudopanax spp., Nestegis lanceolata, Leucopogon fasciculatus, Raukaua anomalus and treeferns. Fairly open on the ground with scattered low growing Coprosma spp., spleenwort spp., shield ferns, and patches of herb turf’s comprised of Lobelia, Oxalis, Hydrocotyle, and Azorella. Moderate cover of non-vascular species on ground (25%). Other grass native grass and sedge species include Echinopogon ovatus, Poa anceps, Luzula picta, Microlaena avenacea, Carex banksiana, C. uncinata.
Notes:
Heavy soils present at site, and large population of ungulate pests. Numerous animal trails throughout area and high degree of mammalian browse seen on palatable species.
