Habitat:
Locally established along the open margin of a small wetland. Sometimes occurring as discrete patches (c. 10 cm x 10 cm), with occasional larger patches (50 cm x 50 cm or more). Growing as a discontinuous loose mat among clubrush and other wetland or aquatic flora. Because top-soil has been scraped off, the exposed gently-inclined clay surfaces are wet (occasionally inundated) and relatively infertile, resulting in very little exotic grass encroachment and in dominance by wetland turf species. The area is subject to occasional light grazing by sheep, which further suppresses exotic grasses. The wetland lies near the base of a hill-slope supporting black beech forest, which would originally have graded into wetland swamp forest dominated by kahikatea and pokaka on adjacent flatter surfaces (such as the wetland location).
Microhabitat:
The wetland margin is an ecotone dominated by Eleocharis acuta, Myriophyllum triphyllum, Ranunculus glabrifolius and Lilaeopsis ruthiana (on wetter side) grading to Lobelia angulata, Gonocarpus micranthus and Gratiola concinna (on intermediate scraped surfaces), to exotic grasses (on drier un-scraped surfaces). Other flora growing sporadically beside/among Lilaeopsis ruthiana includes Gratiola concinna, Euchiton limosus, Hypericum pusillum, Plantago triandra and Leptinella squalida subsp. squalida. Drier margins (retaining original soils) are dominated by occasional emergent rushes over exotic grasses, mosses (particularly Calliergon cuspidatum) and Leptostigma setulosum.
