Habitat:
Secondary semi-coastal kanuka forest on steep hill-slopes c. 10 m above Dawn Creek. Growing on colluvial deposits derived from greywacke bedrock and loess capping.
Microhabitat:
Site of population is dominated by a canopy of Kunzea robusta over occasional Melicytus ramiflorus, over Coprosma crassifolia and C. rhamnoides over scattered sedges, grasses and ferns and mosses. Occasional young podocarps (Podocarpus totara and Prumnopitys taxifolia) in the locality.
Notes:
Locally scattered plants in an area. Population size: 10 specimens were found, scattered over an area of about 2 m x 2 m. Specimens are seasonally apparent at this location. Senecio sp. keys out best to S. dunedinensis but appears to differ. It occurs sporadically throughout (at least) Canterbury, often associated with Kunzea forest and treeland, and from semi-coastal to montane habitats. It appears to be more common than S. dunedinensis s.s., with which it can be sympatric.
Physically protected from livestock by fences, and legally protected by a QEII covenant.
