Specimen notes
Supplementary remarks:
Cited inthe protologue of Dicranodontium australe Dixon, Bull. N.Z. Inst. 3(3): 92 (1923) I consider the Hutton & Kirk 63 from Great Barrier Island to be the more appropriate choice (of the two syntypes) as the lectotype, given Dixon's statement "this plant was found unnamed in Mitten's herbarium." I have seen what I consider to be a likely portion of this collection in W. Martin's herbarum (CHR) and labeled as collected by T. Kirk in Nov. 1867 and am quite confident that this material is referrable to D. menziesii. This Brown collection ex Te Anau is unquestionably a portion of Dixon's other syntype. It is,however, less representative of D. menziesii but appears to belong her. There is fertile material of D. menziesii in herb. Mitten (NY) collected by Hutton & Kirk but it cannot be type material of Dicranodontium australe Dixon (because it is fertile).
