Specimen notes
Supplementary remarks:
I no longer think this collection can be referred to P. camptotrachela
Plants more lustrous than N.Z. P. camptotrachela. Stems, leaf shape, and laminal cells same as N.Z. P. camptotrachela. Propagulae numerous in upper axils, to c. 10–12 per leaf, variable in shape, but most clavate-vermicular, and the largest to 300 µm or greater in length, the primorida either peg-like or 2 cells wide at base.
Exhibiting a similar range of propagulae shape & size as CHR 471483 (AJF 8821) from Mt Wellington Tasmania which was named as P. flexuosa by J. Shaw.
In Smith's British Flora this material would key to P. flexuosa Hook. He notes that P. flexuosa is often confused with P. camptotrachela in Europe.
In Shaw's North American treatment it would key to the highly variable P. annotina (Hedw.) Lindb. He notes that in this species the propagulae are oftne highly variable in single shoots and may even vary depending on the part of the growing season in which they are produced.
