Soft-wooded shrub to c. 2.5 m high, almost forming a thicket because of spreading habit. Leaves very soft, glossy dark green above. Flowers light yellow, very fragile and almost dissolved by alcohol. Sepals (2)-2.5-3 cm long, ovate-acuminate, twisted; petals 6-8 x 5-6 cm, very broadly obovate, somewhat asymmetric, strongly imbricate with dark reddish basal blotch. Column 3.2-3.5 cm long; stamens white. Style and stigmas dark purple. Common cultivar, used as spinach.
