Specimen notes
Herbarium history:
Ex herb. W. Bell
Herbarium history:
[Herb T.W.N. Beckett] NZ 759
Supplementary remarks:
I have some doubts about the authenticity of this specimen as I have another & very different Orthotrichum from Mr Bell labelled Mt Earnslaw Jan 1890 on Discaria scrub"
[Beckett TWN]
Supplementary remarks:
Noting Brotherus' comments attached to this specimen, I think that this specimen should not be considered type material. Instead it is preferable to consider herb. Beckett NZ 705 (aslo collected from Mt Earnslaw by Bell in 1890) as the type of Orthotrichum rupestriforme Vent. Lewinsky hedged her bets on this (see p. 398 in Lewinsky 1984: The genus Orthotrichum Hedw. (Musci) in Australasia: a taxonomic revision. Journal of the Hattori Botanical Laboratory 56: 369-460.) and I cannot go any further with it.
