336 Orthotrichum
The leaves when dry are more crisped than O. calvum. but under the microscope they appear identical, cell thickness the same, they also have that peculiar hollow at the lower end of the narrowed portion of hte leaf. In all Mr. Bells opinion of O. calvum the calyptra is glabrous (as Hookerdescribes calvum in Handbook) but in this plant under notice the calyptra (which are young) are covered with long, bright, straw coloured hairs. The operculum is also long beaked somewhat conico-acuminate.
