I have seen areas of bistratose margins near the leaf apices in some leaves

Type:
Syntype of Sciaromium bellii Broth., Öfvers. Finska VetenskSoc. Förh. 55: 101 (1898)
I agree with Sainsbury's opinion that Sciaromium bellii is Cratoneuropsis relaxa (H.f.&W.) Fleisch ex Broth.
HOWEVER I note that this is not the syntype on which Sainsbury (Rev. Bryol. Lichenol. 17: 84, 1948) based his opinion that Sciaromium belli Broth. is a taxonomic synonym of Cratoneuropsis relaxa. Sainsbury examined syntype material collected by Bell at North East Valley, Dunedin. I have not yet been able to locate material from this Bell collection in Herb. Beckett or in the main collection at CHR.
General comments on Cratoneuropsis variability: Plants of Cratoneuropsis which are permanently submerged (which I think this Bell collection from Lime Hills was) tend to have ± straight, broadly ovate leaves which are scarcely cordate at base. The costae are usually stouter (c. 90-100 µm wide near base) and percurrent and there is often some tendency, especially in the lower portion of the leaves, for a weakly-defined border of thicker-walled cells to develop.
In this specimen: Paraphyllia present but sparse, filamentous; leaves ± straight, broadly ovate & scarcely cordate at base. The costae are stout (c. 90-100 µm wide near base) and percurrent and there is often some tendency, especially in the lower portion of the leaves, for a weakly-defined border; margins crenulate or very weakly toothed; I have made several leaf cross-sections of this specimen. The leaf margin or lamina here appears to be consistently UNISTRATOSE.
