Saxicolous in dense fringing pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) forest on rhyolite boulders lying between base of caldera wall cliffs and lake shore. Associated with Plagiochila arbuscula var. arbuscula, Papillaria crocea, Fissidens hyophilus, Lepidolaena taylorii, Pseudocyphellaria chloroleuca, P. [Pseudocyphellaria] multifida, Sticta squamata, Leptostomum macrocarpon, Pyrrosia eleagnifolia, Pellaea rotundifolia and Loxogramme dictyopteris.
