Terrace on 'Wilderness' type soils, modified native subshrub-grassland with intermittent young bog pine (Halocarpus bidwillii), broom (Cytisus scoparius) and exotic grasses (Festuca rubra, Anthoxanthum odoratum, and Holcus lanatus) and lichen species. This site may have been subject to stock grazing in the past (it is immediately adjacent to farmland), but currently only lightly grazed by rabbits.

Near The Wilderness Scientific Reserve, but not within the legal reserve designation.Root system: grows in tufts; roots fineSmall tufting grass 25 - 30 cm tall; leaves fine; bright green in spring acquiring a purple cast later as they dry out over summer. Flowers borne above leaves on culms ranging from 40 - 50 cm tall.
