Supplementary remarks:
I am no longer convinced the Hypnum kirkii Müll.Hal. & Beckett can be placed in synonymy of S. subhumile contiguum var. contiguum. The best type of this name was collected by T. Kirk in the Snares in Jan. 1890 (CHR-Beckett). It is fruiting, unlike the other syntype. It is in habit very nuch like var. S. subhumile var. contiguum, but it has distinctly papillose setae and veg. leaves with denticulate margins. I think these features require it to be separated at some taxonomic level..either species ofr variety.
Allan Fife, March 2007
Supplementary remarks:
Several features distinguish Snares Island material form S. subhumile var contiguum. Most notably the half vegetative leaf margins are sharply denticulate, the setae distinctly mamillose, and the exothecial cells are subcollenchymatous (i.e. with the longitudinal walls markedly thickened, transverse walls relatively thin-walled, and corners not thickend) and arranged in clear longitudinal ranks. Less clear differences involve stem length (somewhat longer and more branched), a tendency for the leaves to be more erect-appressed, and, a slight tendency toward porostiy in the laminal cells. The plants show clear affinity to S. subhumile s.l., but these differences, collecctively, indicate taxonomic distinction at the varietal level in S. subhumile is required. In the past, I considered this collection to be aberrant Wijkia. Although there is something "Wijkia-like" about the branching patterns and the weak tendency to produce attenuate branch tips, I no longer consider this assignment to be correct.
