Leaf teeth, underleaf size, lobing and surface papillae eliminate B. okaritiana and B. exempta, plants scarcely branched. leaves hardly caducous, underleaves broader than stems but seems closer to B. hochstetterii than anything else in the Flora.

Habitat:
At bottom of very steep-sided ignimbrite gorge in stream bed. Site shaded permanently by overhanging dense tanekaha (Phyllocladus trichomanoides) dominated forest. Growing on dry overhanging ignimbrite rock face immediately above stream flood line. Forming a dense brown-green sheet 2 x 3 m.
